So I swore I would never tell a soul this story, however in my latest theme of being transparent and REAL, I decided to share my learnings. So I started my research off the way any novice would. I Googled the shit out of the phrase “How to get into NYFW”. I found a few articles that were helpful and one in particular that gave me the resources and the step by step processes of how and who to reach out to. The next item on my checklist was to create a media kit. I had been meaning to create one for ages, but with everything, if you don’t know where to start it’s hard to… well… start. With a little ingenuity, I figured what I wanted my kit too look like and with a few expletives yelled at Photoshop, I was ready to send it out.
I found the fashion houses that I am love with and that were showing this season. I then scripted an email that showed my personality, my writing skills, and my love for the brand. I attached my media kit, sent it, and prayed for a response. Out of about 20 emails that were sent out, I only received about 3 responses back. Those responses all read about like this: “Thank you for your interest in XYZ…. but we cannot accommodate your request at this time”. Fuck my life. It was so discouraging, saddening, and just, out right, sucked balls.
I was beyond disappointed, but I kept the same mantra in my mind from the first moment I started on this little journey. This mantra was that even CEO’s of the most successful companies have had numerous “No’s”. I realize that I am going to get a ton of “No’s” in my life, but it’s what I do with those “Np’s” that will determine how successful I will be. If I gave up every time someone rejected me, then I’d probably become a recluse, peeing in jars and talking to my pet lamp. That just isn’t me.
So I decided to pick myself up off of the living room floor (which I decided they would probably find my body after I died from a broken heart) and try again next season. I even said in my response to the rejection emails, that they would be hearing from me again. And that’s exactly what I will be doing come September, and the February after that, and the September after that, until I get a Y-E-S.
