Layering leather 101 can be tricky in summer and winter. It can be difficult for even the master street styler. When I purchase a faux leather piece of clothing, whether it’s a dress or jacket, my key to creating the perfect leather look is to not overload my frame. Leather, whether faux or real, can be super heavy and can make you lose your shape. So whether it’s a pair of leather leggings with a loose chunky knit sweater or a sick moto jacket with body hugging distressed denim, pairing a piece that shows your frame or highlights the fitted leather piece will keep you looking chic and well proportioned.

Below are my styling tricks to nail the layering leather 101 trend like a G:

•  If you live in a super frigid place like NY or London, or anyplace other than Southern California, you will be lucky enough to utilize my first layering leather 101 tip. My favorite way to layer leather is by using your fave leather jacket as your warmth, then layering a longer, wool or differently textured coat underneath and over your shoulders. Simply add some skinny and distressed denim, your fave loafers or low heeled booties, and your look’s complete!

• I love the idea of mixing soft with structured. That’s why I layer my structured moto jacket with a soft comfy sweatshirt. Not only does it make everything a little comfier, but is a great transition look. If you’re coming straight from the gym or even going to a casual girl’s night out, this chic combo is an easily style-able option.

• Leather over everything is my styling tip for the layering master. This look that can be hard to style and even more difficult to pull off, however if you brave this styling tip, the leather over everything tip can take a super simple look to perfectly polished chic. The simplest way to rock to the trend is in the first pic below. Take a basic white collared shirt, long enough to cover your bum and reach mid thigh, then add a structured and perfectly tailored leather skirt. Trend complete.

• Lastly, I love mixing textures. Nothing pairs better with leather than lace. Mixing a soft lace camisole with a structured leather jacket is EVERYTHING in my book and looks gorgeous on pretty much everyone. Another option is too find pieces that have lace already in the leather, like the dress I wore in the pics above. Those simple details add a soft touch to the masculinity of leather, while still leaving you feeling like a rockstar.
